Vevey / CH. (nsa) Swiss Nestle S.A. has announced a USD 154 million investment in a new coffee factory in Veracruz, Mexico.
In its first phase the factory will employ 250 people directly and generate a further 2,500 indirect jobs. It has the potential to provide 1,200 direct jobs and 12,000 indirect jobs at the end of its expansion, including support for the training of young people through the dual training model.
The factory will process around 20,000 tons of locally sourced green coffee a year, and is equipped with state of the art environmental technologies. These include treatment and reuse of water, use of 100 percent of coffee waste to produce energy, and use of 100 percent renewable electricity.
Nestle already has a strong coffee presence in Mexico, which includes an existing coffee plant and sourcing of 68,500 tons of green coffee in the country. With the new site, Nestle will have 18 production facilities in Mexico, producing a range of products including coffee, dairy products, bottled water, cooking aids and pet care.
Nestle has identified coffee as a strong growth driver, and the coffee business has seen positive organic growth over the past years. The company is making further investments to lead in the coffee business, creating value for its brands and making a difference for consumers.
