Fletchers Bakeries: 200 workers loose their jobs

Sheffield / UK. (nf) The British bakery sector has been rocked again with the news that another 200 jobs are to be axed – this time in Sheffield at Fletchers Bakeries Limited. There are also plans for reduced working hours at the plant. According to local press reports the job cuts could be expected for early December. Fletchers Bakeries are part of Northern Foods PLC (Leeds). They manufacture and distribute a wide range of fresh and frozen bakery products.

In February Fletchers Bakery already made 80 people redundant at the Sheffield plant. Workers had just been reassured that their futures were secure thanks to a 160 million GBP takeover proposal in January.

In November 2006, Northern Foods announced it had sold its speciality bread, chilled pastry, cakes and flour milling businesses to Vision Capital, a private equity fund. The sale covered the entire issued share capital of Fletchers.
