Drought compels Moldova to ask for assistance

Chisinau / MD. (itt) Moldova plans to turn to foreign countries for assistance in the wake of a severe drought scorching the farmlands here, President Vladimir Voronin said over the national TV. Arid weather has driven Moldovan agriculture into a desperate situation, and the country will have to restore the Soviet-era system of irrigation to prevent dire aftermath of the current heat wave, Voronin said. He compared it with the drought that hit the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic in 1946 and 1947 and entailed mass famine. «We won’t admit a situation where our national food security may suffer», Voronin said, promising strict control over the prices of bread. This country will have to buy about 200.000 tons of food-grade wheat this year. This is about a half of Moldova’s annual consumption.
