Istanbul / TR. (gtg) Food technology company Getir announced that it has acquired the New York City-based online grocery company FreshDirect from Ahold Delhaize USA, the largest grocery retail group on the East Coast. The acquisition will lead to significant synergies between Getir and FreshDirect and emphasizes Getir’s strategic ambitions to grow in the United States. FreshDirect will leverage Getir’s technology and operational footprint to offer faster services to its loyal customer base, which will also benefit from easy access to Getir’s quick convenience service.
FreshDirect will enable Getir to further increase the quality and breadth of its product range, especially regarding fresh products, making it even more attractive to its New York customers.
With over two decades of service, FreshDirect has cultivated business ties with some of the region’s finest food growers and producers and has become a key local online grocery player. Following the closing of the acquisition, FreshDirect will retain its brand name and continue to operate out of its facility in the Bronx, New York City. Both FreshDirect and Getir customers will continue to receive the same service as before.
Addition: In August Getir announced a global restructuring
Getir, the pioneer of ultrafast grocery delivery, announced on 2023-08-22 that it will restructure the global organization to significantly increase operational efficiency. According to the August release the Getir network consists of roughly 23,000 people across five countries. This number includes couriers, pickers, and office employees. Regrettably, Getir intends to reduce its team and, with a heavy heart, part ways with approximately 2,500 talented employees across its markets.
Decisions like these are never taken lightly. However, Getir is determined to do right by all employees affected by the process in line with its values and in full compliance with local laws. Getir is very grateful to all colleagues for their hard work, dedication, and significant contributions to the business.
Getir will continue to operate in Turkey, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and the US. The company remains fully committed to the future of the industry it pioneered eight years ago and will continue to lead it in the future.
