Amsterdam / NL. (bcbv) Booking.com B.V. data from over 50,000 global travellers, reveals six in ten travellers (61 percent) pick a destination for great food or drink. There’s no denying the significance of culinary travel, with more than a third (34 percent) of travellers, rising to 40 percent of millennials, planning to take a food trip in 2018.
Almost half (49 percent) of travellers hope to be more adventurous with the type of cuisine they eat, rising to 60 percent of millennials. One way to achieve this is to sample local delicacies whilst travelling. Almost two thirds (64 percent) of travellers will try to eat more local food in 2018.
Top destinations for local food
Some of the best places to try the local cuisine are in Southeast Asia, with regional delicacies like dim sum, noodles and pho. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that exploratory eaters also come from this area, as 57 percent of Asians confirm they are looking for new cuisine to try this year.

Over half (51 percent) of global travellers are likely to seek out local street food markets this year, which is a great way to try local food. More than half of travellers (54 percent) want to experience more unique dining experiences when travelling and food trucks are the perfect way to do this. This is most popular amongst Asian travellers from China (65 percent), India (57 percent), Thailand (53 percent), Indonesia (50 percent) and Hong Kong (48 percent).
