GIA: about whole grain and high fibre foods market

San Jose / CA. (gia) The global whole grain and high fibre foods market is projected to reach about 21 billion USD by 2010. The primary growth driver, according to a new report by Global Industry Analysts Inc (GIA), is a growing awareness of their health benefits.

GIA says whole grains are the cereal grains, which possess bran and germ in addition to the endosperm, as against refined grains that possess the endosperm alone. Whole grains or foods feature all the necessary elements and nutrients of the natural whole grain seed. In case, the grain has been processed – cracked, rolled, crushed, extruded or/and cooked – the food product has to provide approximately the same rich set of nutrients, which are present in the original grain seed.

Increasing awareness of the health benefits of consuming whole grains and their products is expected to spur the growth of whole grain market. The interest in the nutritional advantages provided by whole grain foods has also increased demand for a wide range of products including cereals, nuts, seeds, whole grain pastas and flours, and many fruits and vegetables containing high fibre. The United States has established The Grain Foods Foundation, a multi-million dollar program for educating people about the nutritional advantages of bread and several grain products. In addition, the US Department of Agriculture has also issued instructions regarding the whole grain content that needs to be incorporated in the normal diet.

The USA remains the largest market for whole grain and high fibre foods, with an estimated 5,6 billion USD in 2006, according to GIA. Europe is the second largest market in terms of consumption of whole grains and high fiber foods, and the region is expected to account for a market share of 29 percent in 2010.

The cereals and grains market represents the largest segment, with 10,8 billion USD in 2006. Baked food and snacks represent the segment with the most potential – projected to register a healthy compounding annual growth rate of eight percent over the next five years. Improved consumption levels in developed countries such as the USA and Europe forms the major contributing factor for growth in the whole grain and high fibre foods market, according to GIA.

Moreover, growing awareness and advantages of using whole grain and high fibre foods in regular diet has provided a major boost to the Asian market, which is expected to gain importance in the next five years. Asia-Pacific including Japan is predicted to witness the fastest growth of about seven percent in the global whole grain and high fibre foods market. China is witnessing favourable growth in the grain market, as it produces and consumes a large amount of grain. China´s exports have also increased and are similar to Canada, Australia, the USA and other wheat exporting countries. China´s corn, wheat and rice trade has also closely matched with the world market, as a result of quality seed plantation, enhanced irrigation facilities and other appropriate measures.
