Gzira / MT. (gh) Golden Harvest Mfg. Co. Ltd. inaugurated the largest and most technologically advanced bakery in Malta after a 20 million EUR investment. The new plant at San Gwann industrial estate, which produces some 65’000 items daily, has a floor area of 14’500 square metres.
The plant is highly energy efficient and is equipped with the latest environmental friendly technologies including a photovoltaic system which provides 40’000 KW of energy per annum thereby reducing energy costs by 18 percent. It also has a solar water heating system which supplies hot water throughout the building, a modern waste separation system and a large water reservoir. The water is purified through a reverse osmosis system and used as second class water. All oven burners use LPG gas thereby reducing emissions and contributing to the company’s environmental policies.
The new building was designed and built in collaboration of a world-renowned Israeli bakery management consultancy firm. The new plant now was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi in the presence of Finance Minister Tonio Fenech and company chairman John Aquilina. Malta´s pioneering bakery and confectionery (since 1946) is supported by a chain of 13 company shops and a fleet of 23 delivery vehicles.
«Our old plant in Gzira is in the middle of a residential area», Aquilina said to local media. «True, we were here first and the neighbouring blocks built around us, but it was really time to move out. The new plant in San Gwann means production can run more smoothly and even more efficiently than in Gzira». The new plant boasts five storeys for Golden Harvest´s 150 staff to run the operation´s production, packaging, storage, distribution and administrative arms even more efficiently than in Gzira. Powered by two 16’000 KVA transformers, the new premises boasts the bakery, an impressive cold room that stores up to 1’100 pallets, and nine loading bays. The building has also been designed to accommodate any further company expansion.
