Greggs PLC: builds new bakery, creates new jobs

Newcastle upon Tyne / UK. (fm) Greggs PLC, the United Kingdom´s leading retailer specialising in sandwiches, savouries and other bakery-related products, has completed work on a twelve to 13 million GBP production facility as part of a wider regeneration scheme on a brownfield site in Manchester. The new bakery, offices and distribution centre will serve more than 180 Greggs retail outlets in North West England. The site replaces an existing bakery and will secure approximately 300 jobs, according to a report of the British «Food Manufacture». Work started on the 6’689 square metre facility in 2008, led by Nottingham-based food and drink sector construction specialist «Clegg Food Projects». Clegg MD Steve Giltrap said in the report: «As a new-build facility, the bakery utilises the very latest technologies in order to meet exacting hygiene standards». The new bakery is the latest in a line of projects undertaken by Clegg for Greggs. The firm recently completed a twelve million GBP bakery at Cambuslang, near Glasgow, and extended and upgraded other facilities based in Treforest, South Wales. Greggs has more than 1’200 outlets in the UK, employing 18’000 people.
