Abuja / NG. (tt) Another region, another problems: The Chief Regulatory Officer of Nigeria´s National Agency for drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Oyo State has told bakers to register their bakeries with the agency or have them sealed off. Speaking with «The Tide» in Ibadan, the Officer who expressed satisfaction at the level of compliance, said about 2’000 bakeries across the state had so far complied. He, however, did not give the number of those who had yet to comply. He said the registration exercise commenced nationwide in 2007 following an order handed down by NAFDAC Director-General. The Chief Regulatory Officer, who said registration was free, said the agency initiated the move because of the rising cases of kidney dysfunction and other problems associated with the human organs. He said with the registration, NAFDAC would be able to detect bakeries which use banned chemicals such as potassium bromate to enhance their products. The NAFDAC chief urged bakers who had yet to register to do so immediately in the interest of the people. He said to ensure compliance NAFDAC would embark on inspection of bakeries. The Officer said defaulters would have their premises sealed off (source).
