Noumea / NC. (rnz) The government of New Caledonia wants to fight the rising cost of wheat. Since this week a new bread called «eco bread», that is subsidised by the government, has been launched in the bakeries. It costs 130 CFP or around 1,50 USD. This price has been frozen for a year thanks to a subsidy of nearly two million US-Dollars. Around 10.000 «eco-bread» loaves are to be produced each day. This measure is designed to soften the impact of the rising cost of wheat, which has gone up by 50 percent since the beginning of the year. New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France, located in the region of Melanesia in the southwest Pacific. At about half the size of Taiwan, it has a land area of 18.575,5 square kilometres. The population was 240,400 inhabitants as of January 2007 official estimates (Source).
